Man on man, what a hectic last few months. I am not even sure where to begin. I guess we could start with this thing. I have spent some time trying to get this site up to date and I think its finally there. I have been slacking so hard over the last year and really let this thing go. That said I am pretty happy with how this thing looks and functions. I hope you like it.
Switching gears, its been a rough ride since August. I have been so lucky for so long I guess I was due for a run of bad luck. Its been about a year and a half since Kim and I bought our house. Since then we have tried to put some work into it but haven’t really had the finances to do a bunch. That said, back in August our water main fractured in the slab of the house and we had to have our entire house re-plummed. That meant tearing huge holes in our walls to run all the new plumbing. With that, we decided to go ahead and get a loan to pay for full renovations of our bathrooms. To boot, our house sub-panel burn up just a week afterword and needed replaced as well. When it rains it pours. We are doing all the work ourselves so things are moving super slow but at least its moving. I try an keep some photos up here of our progress.
To go with that, about a week after the water break, my grandmother died. It was pretty tough to swallow for a number of reasons. The worst part wasn’t even for me, it was for my step dad who had been planning a trip to come visit. They were planning to arrive just 2 days after her death.... It was tough. RIP Grandma Carol.
Nothing can ever compare to losing those you love. Her passing did help give me some perspective. Since then I have been working extremely hard to get my things in order. As my close friends know my work (job) schedule has been brutal and really wearing on me. I have been tossing the idea of leaving back and forth. Instead of just walking away I decided to get all my ducks in a row and see if I run into any new opportunities. It so happens that in the middle of August one of these opportunities popped up. Sadly it wasn’t enough to get me out of my day job, but it got my head in a better spot. That opportunity was getting back in the classroom. I love teaching at the collegiate level and have really missed it since I left that world back in 2013. Its been unbelievably rewarding spending time with these young people and teaching them the ways of the drawing pencil. Big thanks to Kanazawa for helping me get back into it.
All of this has me thinking about getting back in the studio and shop. Its been far to long since I made a new body of work including getting some of these motorcycles I have back on the road. I am by no means a "bike builder.” I just really love bikes and creating things. There has been nothing I have ever created that has been as meditative as building motorcycles. All that in mind, I think I am ready to jump off the deep end and dive into some new work. The last time I mixed my art with bikes, I created what I considered the most complete work I have ever made. The installation I made in 2015, “Beginner’s Guide to Masculinity” took all of my loves and mashed them together. I think its time to do it again.
I hope I can live up to the words I just put down here and actually get things going again. Often I talk about big things and am then quickly distracted. Anyways, I am pretty sure I am gonna check out of social media to help me focus. So keep up with me here, just like its 2005 again ;)
